The River's Child

About

Welcome to The River's Child!

Stories shape the way we understand the world. They capture emotions, share experiences, and inspire new ideas. At The River's Child, we believe that words have a unique power—to move, to heal, to connect, and to transform. That is why we have created a digital platform where literature and lifestyle come together, offering a space for creativity, reflection, and meaningful conversations.

Whether through compelling essays, insightful perspectives, or artistic expressions, The River's Child strives to make every piece of content resonate with our readers, providing inspiration for both the mind and the soul.

At The River's Child, we believe that every story has the potential to create change. A well-told tale can transport us to different worlds, challenge our perceptions, and help us see life from a new perspective. We are committed to curating content that not only informs but also inspires, fostering a space where diverse voices can be heard and celebrated.

Our platform is built on the idea that literature and lifestyle are deeply connected—the way we tell stories influences the way we live, and the way we live shapes the stories we tell. From thought-provoking essays on society and culture to reflective pieces on personal growth, creativity, and well-being, we offer a rich blend of content designed to spark curiosity and encourage exploration.

Just as a river carves its path through landscapes, shaping everything in its wake, we believe that ideas should flow freely, unrestricted and ever-evolving. Our mission is to provide a platform where words are not confined but allowed to move, inspire, and transform those who encounter them.

The beauty of storytelling lies in its ability to bring people together. Whether you are a writer, a reader, an artist, or simply someone who loves to explore new ideas, The River’s Child welcomes you with open arms.

No matter where you are in your journey, The River's Child is here to accompany you—guiding, inspiring, and celebrating the beauty of life through the power of words.

So, come along. Let’s explore, create, and celebrate the magic of stories together.

Notes from the Editors

Afsan Chowdhury

We are very happy to return again. The river does dry up regularly and we have these pauses lasting years sometimes but this time we are better prepared and have got a new gang in charge, very young, very active in charge and also a system in place. From a solo show we now have a team of five running the show. And if anyone drops out , another will take the place if the system works. Hoping it does but we may disappear again- it's true. But we are an optimistic lot and know we shall keep popping up.

I , Afsan Chowdhury, began the magazine , maybe the only English language magazine in the country a few decades back but couldn’t continue. We returned again in the digital space but again disappeared as corona hit the world. Now it’s the third incarnation and hopefully we can go on.

We now have a Board, made up of eminent writers and academics and like a protective umbrella. We thank them for agreeing to be members.

Our Executive Editor is Sumaiya Tasnim, a young lady, who writes and teaches, and has a vision of making TRC more youth centred so we shall try to reach the English reading and writing crowd in Bangladesh as well as hopefully a few South Asian countries. We do have a few representative pieces from India, Nepal and Pakistan and hope to make it a regular feature.

Our techno team is very young and very energetic and I leave it to the Ex.Ed to decide the relationship but they are the horses that will pull The River's Child carriage into the future.

The issue is dedicated to the memory of Shahrukh Picklu who was a very esteemed contributor, friend and bon vivant of us all. He shall be remembered not just by his friends but also by The River’s Child.

No more words from the Editor. Largely in name only now and let the future receive us all.

It is not everyday we find a creative space in the everydayness of our mundane life. The River’s Child motto is to bring voices together and invite all to become experimental in terms of creativity. Our identity lingers in the smoggy air of Dhaka, flashing advertisement panels of sky high buildings, in the vastness of crop fields and in dialects of many known and unknown. With The River’s Child we want you to discover the self through music, poetry, food, cinema and fiction.

Quoting Dr Afsan Chowdhury, “Anything goes!’. A chaotic blend just might be a revelling constant for us all. As I write this, I want you to consider the importance of documenting your creative work. In a world where war is endless and self-assurance is bleak, we need to bring a communal generosity in terms of creative expression. Take a few minutes of your time to journal your thoughts and craft them because art is everywhere.

So write, make, film and publish!
